
North Kansas City, Mo. — Authorities have identified 42-year-old Rusty A. Donovan, a longtime CVS employee, as the victim in a fatal shooting Thursday afternoon at the CVS pharmacy located at 1914 Swift Street. According to North Kansas City Police, officers responded to reports of a shooting inside the store around 3 p.m. Upon arrival, they found Donovan behind the checkout counter suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police arrested Antonio Serrano, 29, at the location shortly after the incident. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Serrano pointing a firearm at employees before shooting Donovan. During questioning, Serrano allegedly told investigators he had consumed eight beers prior to the shooting and confronted Donovan over a personal dispute involving a former partner. Serrano has been charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm. Authorities emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The CVS store remains closed as the investigation continues but is expected to reopen soon. Deputy City Administrator Kim Nakahodo confirmed that the investigation is active and being handled by local authorities. Community members have expressed grief over the loss of Donovan, describing the event as a tragic reminder of the risks faced by front-line workers.
